13 July 2011 Mumbai bombings

The 13 July 2011 Mumbai bombings were a series of three bombs that exploded at different locations in Mumbai on 13 July 2011 between 6:30pm and 7:15pm IST. The blasts occurred at Opera House , Zaveri Bazaar, and Dadar West.[1]

The first explosion took place in a meter box at Khaul Gali in south Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, the second explosion was reported in a taxi at Kabutar Khana bus stand in Dadar area while the third blast was reported from Opera House in Charni Road.[2][3] Around 8pm IST, around 100 injuries and around 16 deaths were reported. At 2100 Hours IST, the toll reached 16.[4]

Zaveri Bazaar is near the Mumbadevi (Hindu) temple, in which some people were injured, Mumbai police representative Nisar Tamboli told CNN-IBN. Zaveri Bazaar was one of the scenes of a twin bombing in 2003 that killed 54 people.

The Home Ministry of India classified the bomb blasts as a terrorist act and dispatched a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team to the bomb site.[5] Preliminary investigations suggested the use of 7 IED explosives in the blasts. The explosive devices were wrapped in tin foils and tiffin carriers. The NIA was investigating the possible involvement of Indian Mujahideen and the Lashkar-e-Taiba in the blasts.[6][7]

Terror date 13 points to role of Indian Mujahideen and Lashkar

NEW DELHI: Despite lack of a prior warning or heightened threat assessment of a terror attack, the date of the latest Mumbai attack has focused the attention of security agencies on the hand of the jihadi group Indian Mujahideen (IM), given the Lashkar-linked outfit's penchant for striking on the 13th and 26th days of a month.

The IM, acting in consort and at the behest of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), is the likely suspect with its network of sleeper cells and sympathizers. Once again, as has been the case often in the past, a terrorist attack has happened on 13th.

Sustained questioning of arrested IM members, including those who willingly collaborated after being held, has failed to resolve the enigma of the dates even though they add up to compelling evidence.

Mumbai blasts renew scrutiny of Pakistan's crackdown on militants - Guardian UK

Despite international pressure on Pakistan, most of the suspected masterminds behind the 2008 attacks remain at large.

Indian investigators are only beginning to sift through the wreckage of three terrorist bombings in Mumbai. Suspicions have immediately turned to Pakistan-connected militant groups. Whatever the investigation uncovers – and it's still very early – one thing is clear: those groups still operate despite international pressure on Pakistan after the Mumbai attacks almost three years ago.

The coordinated rush-hour explosions, which killed at least 21 and wounded more than 100, were smaller and less sophisticated than the meticulously planned strike on Mumbai in November 2008. During that three-day rampage by the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group, ten gunmen targeted westerners and Jews, killed 166 people and left India and Pakistan on the brink of war. Testimony at a recent trial in Chicago revealed that officers of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) helped Lashkar fund and plan that maritime assault on Mumbai. Commando-style raids are Lashkar's signature.
